Apple launched their new iPad media tablet device today.

The iPad runs an operating system similar to the iPhone OS with a customizable homescreen and a full multi-touch interface on a 9.7-inch IPS capacitive glass screen. Like with the iPhone, a semi-translucent keyboard appears on-screen when needed, and web pages, photos, movies, books, calendars, emails, and other applications and games can be enjoyed in a landscape or portrait orientation.

Haha, yeah. I would see myself mostly using it for:

- Email, Address Book, and Calendaring
- Doing presentations (you can connect a projector to it via a cable you buy separately)
- Listening to / watching audiobooks, videos and podcasts

I love that iWork is available for it. I currently use the Dropbox iPhone app to get access to the documents on my Mac from my iPhone, but Dropbox doesn't let you edit documents like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will.

The iPad could be a great universal touch interface for things like controlling your home entertainment system, having an interactive cookbook in the kitchen, et cetera.

It's too bad that it doesn't have USB input or HDMI output. What use is watching HD movies if it's in a 4:3 resolution?

I liked that it is small enough to carry around, yet not tiny like the iPhone which is only really for impromptu web browsing, because extended periods of web browsing make your eyes squint. Also, it would be great for short trips away from home, saves lugging your Macbook if all you need to do is check your emails. Also, I had thought about buying a Kindle, but Apple's iBook feature sold me.

Might be a silly question, but the iPad is pitched a little cheaper than the iPhone, isn't that going to do them out of iPhone business?

@toodoo Yeah, the movie resolution sucks a bit, but it'll still be better than watching on an iPhone.

@bubs Depending in whether the iBook store is available is countries other than the USA, I might get a Kindle too. One of the benefits the Kindle has over the iPad is the eInk screen - less eyestrain.

I don't think the iPad will influence iPhone sales, the the iPhone has telephone capabilities that the iPad doesn't. Also, depending on which new features are released with iPhone OS 4.0, there might be additional differences.
