Hi All,
It is very tough to create a software. As it needs more accuracy and attention for it. Only programmers can know how it is made after the solid efforts. It is really a tough work made by them for people. Even small program can get lot of time.

Hi Willem,

Thanks very much for your detailed response, it has helped a lot in sorting out the differences between the courses, which the Universities themselves do not explain. <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

At the moment I am more interested in web development, and so, like you mentioned, I don't think that CPUT offers a completing fitting course for me - although I do see that there are some courses that will be valuable, like the Business courses, but these may overlap (in a certain sense) with the Business Management course I am studying at the moment.

Here are the UNISA Computer Science course subjects, they offer the 3 year degree. I won't lie, the Degree does look tough!! :

First Year: Theoretical computer science 1, Introduction to programming 1 and 2, Computer systems: Fundamental Concepts, Introduction to business information systems, Human-computer interaction 1, Visual programming 1, Linear algebra.

Second Year: Theoretical computer science 2, Programming: data structures, Programming: contemporary concepts, Computer organisation, Computer networks, Formal logic 2, Structured systems analysis and design, Object-orientated analysis, Visual programming 2, Introduction to entrepreneurship and small-business management, Rational decision-making.

Third Year: Theoretical computer science 3, Advanced programming, Operating systems and architecture, Computer graphics, Techniques of artificial intelligence, Formal logic 3, Principles of databases, Advanced systems development, Database design and implementation, Software project management, Human-computer interaction 2.

I had thought of the Zend PHP Certification - my only concern is that it is for someone more familiar with the language, someone who perhaps had been programming in the language for a good few months already and had prior programming experience. Perhaps, my idea on it is wrong though? I'd be keen to give it another look if it is indeed pitched more at a beginner programmer.

Another quick question, what would an example of a web base security subject be?

Thanks so much for the pointers on what to look out for in courses! Really appreciate the help and guidance! <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

@toodoo Yeah, the movie resolution sucks a bit, but it'll still be better than watching on an iPhone. <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

@bubs Depending in whether the iBook store is available is countries other than the USA, I might get a Kindle too. One of the benefits the Kindle has over the iPad is the eInk screen - less eyestrain.

I don't think the iPad will influence iPhone sales, the the iPhone has telephone capabilities that the iPad doesn't. Also, depending on which new features are released with iPhone OS 4.0, there might be additional differences.

I liked that it is small enough to carry around, yet not tiny like the iPhone which is only really for impromptu web browsing, because extended periods of web browsing make your eyes squint. Also, it would be great for short trips away from home, saves lugging your Macbook if all you need to do is check your emails. Also, I had thought about buying a Kindle, but Apple's iBook feature sold me. <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Might be a silly question, but the iPad is pitched a little cheaper than the iPhone, isn't that going to do them out of iPhone business?

Hey Johan

I had the same problem a while ago. The way I solved it was by:

Uninstalling the Facebook app (hold your finger down on the app's icon until it starts wiggling, then tap on the little "X" that appears)

Restarting the iPhone (hold down the Sleep / Wake button until a "slide to power off" button appears, then slide the slider; hold the Sleep / Wake button again to turn the device on)

Reinstalling the Facebook app

Let me know if that doesn't help!

The iPad could be a great universal touch interface for things like controlling your home entertainment system, having an interactive cookbook in the kitchen, et cetera.

It's too bad that it doesn't have USB input or HDMI output. What use is watching HD movies if it's in a 4:3 resolution?

- Email, Address Book, and Calendaring
- Doing presentations (you can connect a projector to it via a cable you buy separately)
- Listening to / watching audiobooks, videos and podcasts

I love that iWork is available for it. I currently use the Dropbox iPhone app to get access to the documents on my Mac from my iPhone, but Dropbox doesn't let you edit documents like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will.

Willem on "Study Decisions - Computer Science course at CPUT vs UNISA"

Hey!

Well, it depends on what area of computer science you want to work in after your studies:

If you want to do research or build scientific / engineering applications (think C++ development, mathematics), Stellenbosch is your best bet.

If you want to move into a Microsoft-based development / management role (think ASP.net, C#, IIS Web Server, etc.), CPUT will be good.

I'm not sure about UNISA's courses, but if you tell me details course about the course content I'll take a look.

Keep in mind, though, that no University course will offer you the latest technologies or exactly what you want to learn. A lot of it depends on self-study and doing projects for yourself (or for clients) while you study.

I attended that course at CPUT for 4 years, the first three was for my National Diploma and the last one was for my B.Tech. However, at the end of the course only myself and one of my friends became open-technology-based (i.e. non-.net) developers.

The good thing about a university qualification is that it shows the student was willing to put in some effort towards getting the diploma or degree. Even so, when interviewing candidates I always ask applicants to show me examples of projects they've done on their own time outside of studies or work to give me an indication of where their skills lie.

The National Diploma at CPUT covered:

C++ Development

COBOL Development

Accounting Information Systems

Business Analysis

Databases (both Theoretical work and Oracle-based work)

Software Project Management

Information Systems Theory

The B.Tech covered:

Systems Software

Business Analysis

Software Project Management

Research

As you can see, it had very little to do with Web Development and a lot with the way IT can be applied to Business. If I wanted to take more software development subjects, my options would have been:

COBOL

Assembler

Microsoft ASP.net

Microsoft C#

I knew back then that I wanted to do web development one day, and COBOL would have been useless (banks are pretty much the only companies still using it on a large scale). Assembler is not useful if you want to do web development either, and ASP.net and C# are closed (proprietary) technologies, so I didn't even consider them.

I had no interest in working in a Microsoft-based development environment, so since I knew very little about business processes and accounting I rather took the business subjects at university and studied software development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Java, Python, etc.) and Linux in my own time.

The foundational understanding of how accounting and businesses work helped me quite a lot in finding and keeping the jobs I wanted. Out of all the subjects I did at CPUT I'd say Business Analysis, Accounting, Databases and Software Project Management were the ones most relevant to what I'm doing today.

Regardless of where you end up studying, have you considered applying for the Zend PHP5 Certification on the side? As far as I know the exam is held in Cape Town every few months, and the study guide isn't that expensive. It won't make someone a PHP Master, but it will give you an excellent overview (as well as some hands-on experience) of all the different facets of the language.

If you specifically want to go into Web Development, these are the things I'd recommend you look for in a course:

Some kind of marketing subject (although you already have marketing experience, which is great)

HTML & CSS development with a focus on web standards

PHP development (some courses offer Flash and ActionScript, but in my opinion the capabilities of JavaScript libraries, HTML5, and CSS3 will easily surpass these in the near future)

Database Theory (most relational database systems work the same so it doesn't really matter which flavor (MySQL / Postgresql / etc.) you do in the course; the important thing is to learn how relational databases work and how SQL syntax works)

Some kind of web application security subject

Project Management

If you could find out what the subjects for the UNISA course are and let me know, I'll take a look at them for you. <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

The iPad runs an operating system similar to the iPhone OS with a customizable homescreen and a full multi-touch interface on a 9.7-inch IPS capacitive glass screen. Like with the iPhone, a semi-translucent keyboard appears on-screen when needed, and web pages, photos, movies, books, calendars, emails, and other applications and games can be enjoyed in a landscape or portrait orientation.

I am looking into studying a computer science course with possibly UNISA or CPUT next year.

I've had a look at both course break-downs and both look very enticing! I am weighing up the pros/cons of studying via UNISA and CPUT. A pro for CPUT is that they offer evening classes, and a chance to interact with lecturers/ students, while UNISA offers what looks like a highly comprehensible course in computer science with the outcome being a degree (with honors if you wanted).

What are your thoughts on studying a course in computer science (in general - does it help prepare you for the industry? do employers look for certain types of qualifications when hiring?). What has been your experience studying at CPUT and what would you recommend when weighing up the differences between CPUT and UNISA.

Thank you <img src="http://www.geekology.co.za/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

There are two ways to add syntax highlighting to source code in the Geekology forum posts:

1. Use backticks ("`") around the text you want highlighted. This works best for single lines of code:

<?php echo 'Hi!'; ?>

2. Use opening and closing square brackets (e.g. "[ php ]" and "[ /php ]" without the spaces) around the text you want highlighted. This works best for multiple lines of code:

PHP:

< ?php

 echo 'Hi!';

? >

Languages supported by the second method include:

ActionScript

ASP

C

CPP

CSS

Delphi

HTML
