Putting an iPhone into DFU or Recovery Mode with iTunes 8.2
Part of the iPhone Jailbreak, Activate and Unlock process requires that you put the device in DFU or Recovery Mode. The instructions below were written for use with iTunes 8.2:
If you’re Jailbreaking, Activating and / or Unlocking a fresh iPhone that’s never been modified before (if PwnageTool was used, it will show a PwnApple logo while the device boots), you’ll need to put the device into DFU Mode:
- While the device is on, hold down the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons for exactly 10 seconds, the device will restart.
- Release the Sleep / Wake button, but keep holding down the Home button for another 10 seconds.
- Release the Home button.
If you’re Jailbreaking, Activating and / or Unlocking an iPhone that’s been modified before (if PwnageTool was used, it will show a PwnApple logo while the device boots), you’ll need to put the device into Recovery Mode:
- Turn off the device by holding down the Sleep / Wake button until a “slide to power off” message appears, then sliding the slider.
- Press and hold the Home button, then connect the iPhone to your Mac with the USB cable while contuing to hold the Home button.
- Wait until iTunes displays a message that it “has detected an iPhone in recovery mode“, then let go of the Home button.
Once an iPhone is put into Recovery Mode, it will be stuck in the Recovery Mode Loop (when the device restarts it’ll automatically go back into Recovery Mode). To get out of the loop, follow the instructions detailed here.
