Firefox Quick Tip: Custom search keywords

Mozilla Firefox 3.* allows you to define search keywords for any search box you find online. These searches can then be triggered by entering the keyword followed by a search term directly into your URL bar.

Search keywords can be defined by right-clicking on any search box, choosing the ‘Add a Keyword for this Search…‘ option, filling in a Name and Keyword, then clicking on the ‘Add‘ button.

Search keywords can be triggered by clearing all text from the URL bar and entering your keyword followed by a search term. For example, if you defined ‘g‘ as your keyword for ‘google.com‘, ‘gza‘ as your keyword for ‘google.co.za‘, and ‘t‘ as your keyword for ‘technorati.com‘, you could trigger a search by entering one of the following strings:

g {search term}

gza {search term}

t {search term}
